A two-year-old labradoodle found covered in blood lost an eye after reportedly being shot in the face.
Two-year-old pooch Waffle was found with what looked like puncture wounds on his face and with his eye “turned inside out” after he had gone missing from his home in Cambridgeshire.
The family dog had reportedly been distracted by a scent of rabbits when he disappeared into nearby orchards for about 20 minutes.
His owner found him a short while later on the edge of the garden.
A GoFundMe appeal was set up by Waffle’s family’s neighbour, Debs Bleathman, who described the scene when Waffle was discovered.
“His face was covered in blood and there were a large number of what looked like puncture wounds all over his head.”
“It looked like he may have been attacked by either a badger or a fox, both of which can do a lot of damage if cornered or defending cubs.”
Waffle was taken to the vets where he was given pain relief.
There, they found that what they believed were shots had punctured Waffle’s eye and it could not be saved.
In the appeal, Debs said: “Imagine how his family felt seeing this, especially the two boys, aged eight and nine, who are Waffle’s world and best friends.
“Any money donated will be used to help pay Waffle’s vet bills as he is, unfortunately, not insured.”
After two days, the target of £1,000 was smashed, and the amount raise is currently £2,815.
In an update post, Debs added: “I am stunned at how many wonderful, kind, generous people are out there! Waffle’s mum has been in tears looking at the donations and reading your messages.”
She added that Waffle’s wounds are healing and he’s having “lots of cuddles”.
